Given the size of the deal and star attraction of the 28-year-old, speculation as to which squad number he would be given began to rage.

Hazard’s preferred number 10 shirt at Chelsea and for Belgium is currently occupied by Luka Modric, while seven was held by Mariano Diaz.

But the Los Blancos hierarchy have deemed the new summer signing worthy of following in the footsteps of club legends Raul Gonazlez and Cristiano Ronaldo.

However, the decision has not gone down well with some sections of the club’s fanbase.

Given Ronaldo’s obscenely good record for Real, it seems almost unfair to expect Hazard to fill his shoes.

In fact, some supporters took to Twitter to plead with their new summer signing to give the number seven shirt back.

Will be the worst no7 in Real Madrid history

Hazard should return the number 7 jersey if he knows what is good for him. He’ll constantly be compared to Ronaldo

Fellow new signing Luka Jovic will wear No 18, Ferland Mendy received No 23, Eder Militao was handed No 3 and Rodrygo No 27.

James Rodriguez, who spent the last two seasons on loan at Bayern Munich, has returned to the Spanish capital and will take over the No. 16 shirt after Modric was given his previous No.10 shirt.

Zinedine Zidane’s side visit Celta Vigo on August 17 and will hope Hazard’s new number can help them to success.
