Manchester United squad numbers: Anthony Martial takes back the No.9 shirt after surrendering it to Zlatan Ibrahimovic in 2016

Anthony Martial will wear the number nine shirt for Manchester United this season following Romelu Lukaku’s departure.

The Belgium striker joined Inter Milan on Deadline Day in a move worth £74million, leaving the prestigious number vacant.

Anthony Martial is Manchester United’s new No.9

Martial, who first wore the No.9 shirt in his first season, was forced to relinquish it when Zlatan Ibrahimovic joined from Paris Saint-Germain in 2016.

Instead, he adopted the No.11 shirt at Old Trafford – the number he also wore for the France national side.

However, his form and confidence took a dip as a result and he struggled under Jose Mourinho.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer clearly has faith in the former Monaco man and displayed an incredible amount of confidence in the 23-year-old throughout pre-season, deploying him as a centre-forward.

Indeed, during his debut campaign wearing number nine, Martial scored 17 goals in all competitions and recorded 12 assists.

And it is these stats which have got United fans seriously excited about Martial’s return to the number nine ahead of the start of the Premier League season against Chelsea.
