Rio Ferdinand expects Liverpool to miss out on the Premier League title again – with the former England star claiming they will not push Manchester City as hard this season.
Liverpool lost just once in 2018/19, collecting 97 points from their 38 games, but finished a point behind champions City.
Jurgen Klopp’s Reds kicked of the new season with a 4-1 victory over Norwich City on Friday night and many are backing them to finish top of the pile this term.
But, while Ferdinand says they are the only team capable of stopping City from winning a fourth straight title, he feels they will ultimately come up well short – particularly with Alisson facing a long spell on the sidelines.
“I think they [Liverpool] will be further off at the end of the season,” said the Manchester United legend.
“Alisson could be out for a couple of months now with a calf injury – that is a huge loss for them.
“Now we will see how their squad can deal with that. That is the difference. [Divock] Origi came in for [Sadio] Mane yesterday, scored and look good so it is working elsewhere but they searched for a goalkeeper for many a year, found the one and he is out now so they are going to have to deal with that.”
