Manchester United news: Jose Mourinho tells Red Devils to forget Premier League title – top four will be an achievement

Jose Mourinho believes Manchester United’s squad is not strong enough to compete for a Premier League title this season.

The Red Devils kick off their campaign against Chelsea on Sunday in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first full season in charge.

The Norwegian replaced Mourinho in the Old Trafford hotseat last December as United finished a turbulent season trophyless and in sixth place.

And despite splashing out £145million on Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James in the summer, Mourinho does not think it is enough to challenge Manchester City and Liverpool at the top of the league.

He told Sky Sports: “In the Premier League, the dressing room must feel they can win the title, but I think to finish top four would be a good achievement for them.

“When I said that second position the previous season was one of my biggest achievements in football I was not having fun with the words. I just was just telling you what I was feeling.

“I didn’t feel last season we did enough in the transfer window to allow us to compete for the first position because though we finished second the distance to first was very considerable.

“So I don’t feel this season they can [win] but I hope they feel they can because that will be an important motivational push for them.”

Mourinho guided United to their last piece of silverware after winning the Europa League in May 2017.

And he feels it is a trophy the club should aim to win again this term.

He added: “As a start, winning the Europa League.

“When you go to a competition like that you have to win.”
