Manchester United got their 2019/20 Premier League season off to the ideal start with a devastating 4-0 victory at home to Frank Lampard’s Chelsea.

Two goals from Marcus Rashford, and strikes from Anthony Martial and Daniel James secured the rampant win in a game where United were ruthless in front of goal.

‘QUESTION MARK’

Pogba coy on Man United future after opening day Chelsea win

David de Gea – 6

Was well-beaten by efforts from Tammy Abraham and Emerson Palmieri but made a smart save to deny Ross Barkley in the first-half. Generally, a decent performance from the Spaniard.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 8

A very good Red Devils Premier League debut for the full-back who helped keep the likes of Pedro relatively quiet.

Victor Lindelof – 6

The Swede looks far more confident with Harry Maguire as his centre-back partner, however, there are still improvements United’s defence need to make.

Harry Maguire – 7

There was lots of pressure on £80million Maguire going into the game but he did enough to keep Chelsea out. He was also seen barking out orders to his team-mates which is what United have lacked in defence for years.

Luke Shaw – 7

United’s Player of the Year last season was in good form in the 2019/20 opener and got forward plenty of times as well.

Scott McTominay – 6

You know what you’re going to get from McTominay – plenty of effort and heart and today was no different. However, the likes of Mason Mount got the better of the midfielder a couple of times.

Paul Pogba – 6

Despite suggesting he was ready to leave Old Trafford this summer, Pogba is still around and it was more of the same from him today. He wasn’t at his lightning best but offered moments of class on the ball and provided exquisite assists for the third and fourth goals.

Andreas Pereira – 7

This is a big season for midfielder Pereira as he looks to establish himself in United’s first team and he did his chances no harm with a workmanlike display against the Blues.

Jesse Lingard – 7

England man Lingard showed good composure in midfield and was constantly in the Chelsea midfielder’s faces off the ball. Linked up with team-mate Rashford well and charged Andreas Christensen well which led to United’s penalty and their first goal.

Anthony Martial – 6

Squandered a really good chance to give United the lead early on and the game passed him by at points. However, Martial did grab United’s second goal which set United on their way to the convincing win.

Marcus Rashford – 8

He was the scorer of United’s first and third goals and they were well-deserved for Rashford. He gave Chelsea’s defence plenty to think about and led the line well which is what he’ll have to do all season following Romelu Lukaku’s departure.

Substitutes:

Daniel James – 6

Came on in the 74th minute to make a cameo debut but James managed to get on the scoresheet after his effort deflected off Palmieri to make it 4-0.

Mason Greenwood – N/A

After having a promising pre-season, Greenwood came on in the 86th minute. However, the game was won at this point and the forward didn’t really do anything noteworthy.

Juan Mata – N/A

The Spaniard came on with Greenwood and unsurprisingly did not do much in his short time on the pitch.
