Rangers are monitoring developments with Argentine right-back Leonel di Placido.

The 25-year old is being eyed by Steven Gerrard as the Gers boss prepares for the prospect of losing James Tavernier in January.

Crystal Palace are among the clubs keen on the Rangers captain and the Ibrox club are laying the groundwork to replace him after discussing a move for Di Placido.

The Lanus full-back has an Italian passport and is keen to move to Europe with La Liga sides Espanyol and Leganes and Amiens in France also showing strong interest.

Di Placido is available for a knockdown £1million but Rangers are understood to be interested in an initial loan deal.

He is admired by Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni and was called up to the national squad for their two friendlies against Colombia and Guatemala last September, though stayed on the bench for both games.

However, a move to Europe is likely to boost his chances of winning a full cap.
