Trent Alexander-Arnold is ‘as good as David Beckham’ at crossing, says former Liverpool star Danny Murphy

Danny Murphy claims Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold has an ability to cross the ball he has only ever seen before in David Beckham.

Alexander-Arnold has become a city-wide hero following his meteoric rise to Jurgen Klopp’s first-team and for his key role in last season’s Champions League triumph.

The 20-year-old is already a prolific goal creator – he finished last term with 12 Premier League assists, equal with Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen, and provided a impeccable delivery for Divock Origi to head home in Friday’s opening 4-1 victory over Norwich.

Former Redman Murphy says the Melwood graduate is one of three English right-backs who are among the best in their position in Europe, with Manchester United’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka and City’s Kyle Walker completing the trio.

But he names Alexander-Arnold as the man be believes should be England’s first-choice, saying he possesses a technical passing ability totally unique for a defender.

Speaking to talkSPORT hosts Jim White and Natalie Sawyer on Monday, Murphy said: “Gareth Southgate’s got a massive headache but a good one – I think England have three of the best right-backs in Europe.

“We’re spoilt. We’ve got three wonderful right-backs – Kyle Walker, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Aaron Wan-Bissaka – there’s so much quality.

“Trent’s display of passing and technical ability that we’ve not seen in a full-back for many, many years.

“Trent, for me, is as good a crosser of the ball I’ve seen since David Beckham.

“His crossing is already as good as Beckham, definitely. His set plays and crossing are both phenomenal.

“His technical ability, his passing ability is very unusual for a full-back, normally it’s a midfielder who posses those type of quality.

“Ideally you want to see him as a wing-back. He gets caught out in defence sometimes, but he will create and make goals in whatever position he plays.
