Ally McCoist believes UEFA should rename the Champions League after last season’s final – Liverpool and Tottenham – because they haven’t won their league title for a combined 85 years!

On Tuesday’s Sports Breakfast show, hosts Alan Brazil and McCoist debated which teams should be given automatic qualification for Europe’s top competition.

Liverpool beat Tottenham in Madrid to lift their sixth European Cup – but few expected the Premier League rivals to meet in the final

It came after CFR Cluj manager Dan Petrescu blasted UEFA on talkSPORT after his side knocked out Celtic in the preliminary rounds.

Petrescu, the former Chelsea defender-turned-coach, insisted the Scottish champions and his Romanian champions shouldn’t have to qualify for the tournament and should instead sail straight through to the group stages.

And McCoist has taken the debate even further by saying the Champions League brand ‘makes a mockery’ of the tournament.

The former Rangers player and manager said on talkSPORT: “The name of the tournament is effectively wrong – they call it the Champions League but there are probably more teams in it that haven’t won their championship nowadays.

“So, effectively, the name of the tournament makes a mockery of the tournament.

“In the Champions League last year, the final was contested by two teams that haven’t won their league championship in a combined total of 85 years.

“This is the point I’m making: the cup shouldn’t be called the Champions League. If you’re going to continue with it in this format, change the name of it.”

Asked if the champions of each European league should therefore automatically enter the group stages, as suggested by Cluj boss Petrescu, McCoist added: “I think it’s possibly something they should look at.”

However, talkSPORT’s Adrian Durham scoffed at that suggestion and claimed it would drastically lower the standard of Europe’s elite club competition.

Speaking on Wednesday’s Drivetime, the host said: “It’s utterly ridiculous to go down that road.

“There are about 50 odd countries in Europe, so all of their champions have got to be in the Champions League group stages?

“Like Riga FC from Latvia, Lincoln Red Imps from Gibraltar, The New Saints from Wales, Santa Coloma from Andorra, La Fiorita the San Marino champions, Valletta of Malta.

“How rubbish is the Champions League going to be if all these clubs are straight into the group stages – you’re making it rubbish!”
