Borussia Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke appears to have acknowledged Jadon Sancho will not stay at the club forever.

Watzke also took the opportunity to reveal an elite European club made an approach for the winger, but the unnamed club was told the 19-year-old was not for sale.

Sancho shot to prominence last season with his brilliant form for the Bundesliga side, scoring 13 times and making 19 assists in all competitions.

Manchester United were linked with the England international following his impressive performances for club and country.

However, the Premier League club were reportedly told in no uncertain terms that he was not for sale.

In an interview with Ruhr Nachrichten (via the Manchester Evening News), Watke said: “A chief of one of the super clubs asked me back in spring if there was a chance [to sign Sancho] but I told him straight away he should forget about it and he never contacted me again.

“He knew I meant what I said.”

Why Alexander-Arnold, not Walker or Wan-Bissaka will be best right-back

Sancho’s stock has risen ever since he decided to leave Manchester City to try his hand in Germany.

The London-born player was on City’s academy books but left in August 2017 due to fears over his chances of playing in the first-team.

However, despite all this success at the Westfalenstadion, Watzke appears to have conceded that Sancho is unlikely to stay in the future.

Watzke added: “There aren’t many 19 year olds with such a potential.

“He is also not a player from the region or one who would have any connection to it.

“When you have a player like Jadon Sancho, you must reassess the situation every single year. Everything else would not be honest.

“If a foreign player is not convinced that the club is right for him at the exact time, it just does not make any sense [to keep him].”
