Moussa Sissoko EXCLUSIVE: This Tottenham team ‘deserves’ to win a trophy, hopefully we do it this year

Tottenham midfielder Moussa Sissoko has exclusively told talkSPORT he believes his team ‘deserves’ to win a trophy and will be aiming to finally do so this year.

Despite enduring a rough start to life at Spurs, the Frenchman came good last season and is now a key figure in one of the Premier League’s strongest sides.

The club last won a trophy over a decade ago when they lifted the League Cup in 2008 and, unsurprisingly, no members of the XI that beat Chelsea that day remain with them today.

Now, Tottenham have an entirely new team under Mauricio Pochettino who have come close in recent title races, but are still yet to claim silverware after being beaten in the Champions League final last season.

Speaking of the desire to win trophies ahead of talkSPORT’s live and exclusive commentary of Manchester City vs Spurs on Saturday, Sissoko told talkSPORT’s James Savundra: “It’s not just now.

“Even last year or the year before, that’s what we wanted to achieve, but we didn’t do it.

“But I think [for] a few years now the team is doing a great job and we are always close to winning something and it’s always painful to lose near the end.

“I think this club and this team deserves to win something, so hopefully we can do it this year.

“We said it every season now and we’re always missing something, so hopefully this year will be a good one, we’ll have a great season altogether with a lot of success at the end.”

Following last year’s crushing final defeat to Liverpool, Spurs have been active in the transfer market.

Deadline day recruitments of Giovani Lo Celso and Ryan Sessegnon should prove to be interesting additions to the team, with earlier-signed Tanguy Ndombele already making his presence felt.

Sissoko continued: “For Tanguy I think it was an amazing afternoon last Saturday.

“We won the first game, he played well, he scored, so everything was great.

“He played with a lot of quality. I think he showed it when he was in France and then he showed it for his first game.

“And now everyday he has more confidence and I think that will be good for him and for us.

“He came here to add something to the team and I’m sure he will do it during the season.”
