And Van Persie turned back the clock with an assist and a stunning curling equaliser in an entertaining 2-2 draw.

Scoring against City will have done much to further endear Old Trafford icon RVP to the United faithful – but he also did something else that Red Devils fans are sure to love.

Eagle-eyed supporters noticed that Van Persie was wearing Man United shin pads when he took to the Etihad pitch.

It was a brave move from Van Persie, who was joined on the Legends team by other United greats in Gary Neville, Nicky Butt, Michael Carrick, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs.
