Jose Mourinho has turned down the opportunity to be Lyon’s new boss because he’s already accepted an offer from another club, according to the Ligue 1 side’s president Jean-Michel Aulas.
Mourinho has been out of work since being sacked by Manchester United in December 2018, but revealed last month he was ready for a return to management.
Lyon sacked former Arsenal and Barcelona left-back Sylvinho on Monday afternoon after just 141 days in the hotseat, with ‘The Special One’ immediately linked with the vacancy.
Speaking in a telephone press conference on Thursday morning, Aulas confirmed he had approached Mourinho about the position, but he had politely declined.
“We had some fairly flattering exchanges over SMS. It was nice for everyone,” Get French Football reported.
“He did not accept our proposal to meet because he has already chosen another club.”
In an interview by the Coaches Voice last month, Mourinho revealed that he was ready to return to the dugout – on one condition.
“The only thing I know is what I don’t want,” he said. “What I don’t want is crystal clear.
“What I want – the general profile of it of course – but I cannot say clubs and country.
“I am quite pathological in this sense that I have to play to win.”
