Liverpool centre-back Joe Gomez is the man to partner Harry Maguire in England’s defence, according to talkSPORT host Tony Cascarino.

The Three Lions delivered one of their worst performances in some time on Friday night, losing 2-1 to the Czech Republic – and questions are once again being asked about the defence.

Gomez should start for England, claims Cascarino

And former Ireland international Cascarino believes there is a long-term solution to the problem and it comes in the shape of the Reds ace.

“Your looking for Michael Keane and Harry Maguire to be a partnership – so far it doesn’t look like there’s one,” he said.

“Whether that changes between now and next summer, I’m not sure.

“I certainly think Michael Keane gives away too many chances, John Stones, likewise.

“He’s lost his place at Man City and getting injured.

“We’re trying to find the one to partner Harry Maguire and I think Joe Gomez can get in that Liverpool team.

“Unfortunately for him, Joel Matip is playing at a much higher level than anyone expected.”

Meanwhile, Mason Mount, who was handed his debut by Southgate in the match, has not let the defeat spoil his night.

“It was a tough game to make my debut in, but it’s something I’ll remember for a very long time,” he told talkSPORT.

“I’ll take a lot of things from this game, you gain so much experience from these games.

“Hopefully I can take that into the future.”
