The Blues have discussed their interest in the Uruguayan striker who is keen to leave the French champions during the January transfer window

Chelsea have discussed Edinson Cavani’s future with Paris Saint-Germain, but they have stopped short of making an official offer for the striker.

Claude Makelele, who is a technical mentor to Chelsea’s young players, travelled to France to meet PSG over the signing of 17-year-old Kays Ruiz-Atil  and discussed Cavani during the trip.

Blues manager Frank Lampard has publicly stated his admiration for the 32-year-old, who has handed in a transfer request at the Parc des Princes to try to force a move during the January transfer window.

Despite Cavani handing in his transfer request,  PSG have been reluctant to sell the Uruguayan who has had an official €10m offer from Atletico Madrid rejected. However, Atleti remain interested and are likely to push again with a follow-up approach.

Tottenham have been offered the chance to make a move for Cavani after seeing Harry Kane suffer an injury that will keep him out until April and Manchester United could also enter the market after seeing their top scorer Marcus Rashford ruled out for around six weeks with a stress fracture in his back.

Cavani has just six months left on his PSG contract and he has fallen out of favour with his coach Thomas Tuchel due to a host of injury problems this season. PSG have also added Mauro Icardi from Inter to their frontline which already featured Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.

Cavani earns £8.5 million a year after tax at PSG which could prove difficult in negotiations for all interested parties, particularly Spurs, who tend to pay less on wages than their transfer market rivals.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference on Monday ahead of Tuesday’s home game with Arsenal, Lampard discussed the club’s transfer strategy after finding that Chelsea’s primary attacking targets, such as Borussia Dortmund‘s Jadon Sancho, RB Leipzig‘s Timo Werner and Lyon‘s Moussa Dembele, are unavailable in this transfer window.

“I think each case is different and whether it’s worked or not in certain cases, I wouldn’t let that cloud my thinking,” Lampard said.

“I would do it here in a moment if I felt there was experience needed and the role and the player comes up, and they’re gettable. I wouldn’t say, ‘Oh, that hasn’t worked a few times with different players’. I think everyone is different. If it felt right, then it’s something we would look at doing.”

Chelsea are also in talks to sell Olivier Giroud to Inter but the discussions have slowed down after Mateo Politano’s move to Roma collapsed.

Inter are keen to offload Politano before completing a deal for a striker but they have moved to sign Victor Moses on loan with an option to buy for €10 million (£8m/$11m) after seeing Leonardo Spinazzola’s arrival not go through in talks with Roma.
